New Moon in Pisces 2022

Each year, the new moon in Pisces represents the last new moon of the wheel of the year, as Pisces is the last sign before the wheel starts fresh with spring equinox. The 2022 Pisces new moon occurs at 12° Pisces, March 2, 9:34AM PST.

This new moon will likely feel ~extra~ watery as both Jupiter and Neptune are copresent in Pisces for the duration of Pisces season. Jupiter is the traditional ruler of Pisces while Neptune is the modern ruler. The last time Jupiter and Neptune were copresent in Pisces was in 1856, and the next time they will be in this configuration won’t be during our lifetimes. With both the traditional and modern rulers copresent, it turns up the volume on how vividly we will be able to feel and express the Piscean archetype.

New moons are always a time to dream up how we want to grow and shift in new directions, and this lunation is particularly supportive of that type of intention in two major ways. Firstly, the new moon is conjunct (within 2°) Jupiter, the planet of abundance, expansion, and fertility. Second, the new moon is in a sextile configuration with Uranus, the planet of change and innovation. Look to what part of your chart contains Pisces to get some inspiration on where you might direct this energy.

This new moon is a rare and potent healing balm of a lunation, and an opportunity to clear out some of the emotional gunk we’ve accumulated over the last solar year. It also points to what we could all probably use more of—empathy, rest, and optimism.

Pisces season in general is kind of like a dreamscape before the alarm of Aries season rings and pulls us into action. In this liminal space, we are offered a time conducive to emotional and energetic integration of the last solar year. Pisces as an archetype values kairos time: time outside of time. Very different from linear, Saturn-ruled kronos time, kairos time invites us to get lost in realms where linear time does not apply. Some supportive examples include doing magic, meditating, sleeping, dreaming, having sex, art, games, spiritual engagement etc. Without creating intentional time for supportive kairos time, we might be led into engaging in non-supportive kairos activities which usually look like disassociation in it’s multiple forms: doomscrolling or substance abuse, for example. (Obviously this is case-specific and even “non-supportive” kairos activities can be harm reductive sometimes—do what works for you!)

In a society where kairos-ruled activities are largely undervalued, I implore you to prioritize letting go and losing track of time in ways that nourish you—great healing potential can be found in this space. This week’s new moon offers a prime time to do this. I know for some people, stepping into the shimmery, spiraly, feelingsy world of Pisces energy is exciting and alluring, but for others, feeling big feelings and/or prioritizing healing work can be more daunting. If you fall into the latter camp, it could be a good idea to build a safe place to step into that space in a way that feels less scary; the image that’s coming to mind is crying in a mineral bath with a trusted friend but really any safe nook will do. There is no doubt a lot of stuff to collectively grieve right now and this new moon will probably make it abundantly clear what needs release and/or tending. Prepare accordingly :)

At the time of the new moon, there is also a lot of activity in the late degrees of Capricorn. Venus, Mars and Pluto are all sitting very close before their exact conjunction at 27° Capricorn; this pileup brings an incredibly different dynamic to the table than all the planetary activity happening in Pisces. This configuration looks agitating, uncomfortable and intense to say the least. On a global scale, we’re seeing these archetypes in the news: Pluto rules power, corruption and nuclear weaponry, Mars rules war. On a personal level, this energy is important and palpable, too. When inner planets make contact with Pluto, it can illuminate deeper hidden parts of a story. Perhaps a conflict or relationship dynamic that otherwise wouldn’t make waves is suddenly showing you a much deeper picture of systemic imbalance. With this brute and irritating influence, the Pisces new moon can help bring balance. The archetype of Pisces is concerned with compassion and empathy—if you are in the midst of cleaning up a Plutonic mess this week, there will be some Pisces softness available to help buffer any roughness should you be open to it’s influence.

All in all, this is a very sweet new moon, even despite the more tense aspects. Happy new moon blessings <3
